For the past seven years, Otter Creek Brewery in Middlebury Vermont, has been the East coast home for the residential week of our programs. As some of you might have heard, Otter Creek Brewery was sold recently. The new owners are making alterations to the property and will not be able to host our class in November 2010. We are very excited to announce that Harpoon Brewery, in Windsor Vermont, will be our host for the residential week of the November 2010 classes. BREWERS GUILD SCHOLARSHIP **
From
an outstanding group of talented applicants, Benjamin Johnson of
Midnight Sun Brewing Company (Anchorage, AK) has been named recipient of
the first Glen Hay Falconer Foundation American Brewers Guild
scholarship. This scholarship attracted a very strong group of
highly qualified applicants from throughout the Pacific Northwest
region.
Ben
will be attending the American Brewers Guild's Intensive Brewing
Science & Engineering course which runs from January through June
2010. The Intensive Brewing Science & Engineering course is a
22-week distance education program with a final week of residential
instruction. The course is designed for brewers and homebrewers
who lack formal training in brewing science and covers all the
fundamentals of beer production and quality assurance.
The
brewing scholarship is a full-tuition grant along with travel stipend
that is offered with the generous co-sponsorship of the American Brewers
Guild. The American Brewers Guild is a premier school for the
craft brewing industry dedicated to providing a comprehensive learning
experience that focuses on the technical, scientific, and operational
matters and issues that brewers face in a craft brewing environment.
The
Selection Committee, consisting of Bob Craig, Brewmaster and Owner of
Walking Man Brewing, Christian Ettinger, Brewmaster-Owner, of Hopworks
Urban Brewery, Alan Moen, Editor of Northwest Brewing News, Steve
Parkes, Owner and Lead Instructor of American Brewers Guild, and Shaun
O’Sullivan, Brewmaster and Co-Founder of 21st Amendment Brewery, were
given the difficult decision of selecting a single recipient from a deep
and talented group of deserving candidates.
In
making its final decision, the Selection Committee members were
impressed by Ben Johnson's demonstrated accomplishment and dedication to
furthering his brewing skills. In the words of committee members,
Ben's "passion for the art of craft brewing" and his
"thirst for knowledge" set him apart in a group of applicants
that was "packed with talent and accomplishment."
The
Foundation extends congratulations to Ben and a sincere appreciation to
all the applicants for their interest and enthusiasm for the inaugural
Falconer Foundation American Brewers Guild scholarship. The
Foundation also thanks the Selection Committee for its dedication and
energy and wishes to express its gratitude to the American Brewers Guild

2009 Great American Brewers Festival Congratulations to the Guild's alumni, students and instructors who took home 41 medals at this year's GABF. Special mention to Small Brewpub of the year winner, long time guild instructor Will Kemper Brewers Association 2009 Achievement Award WinnersBoston, Massachusetts • April 22, 2009 - Three predominant members of the brewing community were recognized with awards for their dedication and service to the industry at the opening session of the Brewers Association's annual Craft Brewers Conference. Brewers Association Recognition AwardThe Brewers Association Recognition Award went to Ken Allen, founder of Anderson Valley Brewing Co. in Boonville, CA and former chair of the Association of Brewers, a precursor organization of the Brewers Association. Dick Cantwell, Head Brewer at Elysian Brewing Company and Brewers Association Board of Directors member says, "Despite the fact that Ken's brewery (Anderson Valley Brewing) is 32 windy miles from wherever, his beer, his voice and his efforts have been central to craft brewing's credibility and progress." Winners of the Brewers Association Recognition Award are selected each year by the Brewers Association Board of Directors from nominations submitted by association members. Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in BrewingThe Brewers Association presented the Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Brewing to Steve Parkes of the American Brewers Guild. Parkes received this year's award for demonstrating creativity, excellence in brewing and substantial contributions to the craft brewing community, as well as serving as lead educator for hundreds of today's craft brewers. Cantwell says, "Not only is Steve a great brewer with an impressive resumé, his service as an educator through the American Brewers Guild has brought hundreds of brewers into the craft ranks." The Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Brewing was first given in 1997 to honor Russell Schehrer, who died in 1996 at 38 years old, for his contributions to the brewing industry. Schehrer was a founding partner and original head brewer at Colorado's first brewpub Wynkoop Brewing Co. He was also one of the first brewers to produce mead, doppel alt, cream stout and chili beer. Brewers Association brewery members submit nominations every year for the Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Brewing. The winner is chosen from the slate of nominees by a vote of the previous award winners. F.X. Matt Defense of the Industry AwardThe Brewers Association presented the F.X. Matt Defense of the Industry Award to Eric Wallace of Lefthand Brewing Co., in Longmont, CO. Eric led the charge to successfully preserve beer drinker choice and selection in helping defeat damaging legislation in Colorado. "Eric's recent efforts with the Colorado grocery bill were instrumental in keeping the historic relationship between the independent retailer and the craft brewer intact," says Cantwell. The F.X. Matt Award is given in honor of a champion of small brewers, F.X. Matt (1933-2001), president of the F.X. Matt Brewing Co. in Utica, New York from 1980-1989 and Chairman from 1989-2001.
